These are absolutely some of the
most beautiful ducks I have ever owned. They
are small ducks but these are not call ducks. They are
only slightly smaller than a wild type mallard
duck. They are capable of flying so that is
something to be aware of. I keep all of mine in
enclosed pens and let them out on the yard several days
a week. They have never tried to fly away nor do I think
they are capable of doing so, but then that is likely
because they are penned most of the time. Free
range Silver Mallards would likely be very good flying
ducks.
They are prolific layers of small long
eggs. The fertility is usually only around 50% sometimes
better but don't expect much more than 50%. I cant
explain why, perhaps its just because they lay so many
eggs. I have a good hatches if I place these eggs
under a muscovy duck or a setting hen. I DO NOT
have good hatches in an incubator and countless people
tell me the same thing. The mallards will
set and hatch their own but only if they are left alone
and not disturbed by other ducks. A setting ducks
in a large group of Silver Mallards will never have any
peace nor success in hatching their own eggs.
